From an integral perspective we notice the exclusive focus on the upper-right exterior quadrant: ie brain chemistry with little mention of psychological, emotional, socio-economic, cultural, etc. factors. However, what this does hint at is the potential for proper nutrition as part of an integrative approach to addiction. What happens when their is sufficient focus on a &#8220;brain healthy&#8221; diet, along with nutrition and supplements for stress-management and decreasing the inflammation (implicated in so many health conditions including depression). The article hints that at least in this case the pharmaceutical provides no extra benefit to a calcium supplement! This leads us to think that addiction treatment and prevention of relapse ought to include nutritional counselling alongside psychotherapeutic and other approaches (12 steps, etc).
