Incredible discovery of a rather remarkable vine! I’d take a look at Rupert Sheldrakes morphogenetic field theory which actually would manage to explain this fascinating phenomena. Neither of the proposed theories seem particularly plausible – chemical signalling can’t tell a plant what it needs to look like and genetic transfer of genes would have to be extraordinarily specific in order to pass on the exact genes (from highly divergent plants) to alter gene-expression by producing proteins which alter growth and morphology in a very specific way. You’d have to rely on the trial and error of natural selection. Maybe, but morphogenetic field theory is, by the principle of Occam’s Razor, a far more strait-forward explanation…
